I had a look at homebrew: looks very nice and definitely gets around this issue. Saying that, I really don’t mind MacPorts and haven’t really had any problems with. Thanks for the tip though! I will update the post to add this and another simple way I found which gets around the symlinking: just update the PATH environment variable.

Another option, which I prefer is to use the homebrew package manager. It's a lot simpler and more reliable than macports and compiles code from source so you get the latest versions (svn version 1.6.11 (r934486) as of writing).
